Castles & Ruins
CAERNAFON CASTLE Mighty Caernafon Castle is possibly the most famous of Wales' many castles. Its sheer scale and commanding presence sets it apart from the rest. Begun in 1283 Caernafon was constructed not only as a military stronghold but also as a seat of government and royal palace.
HARLECH CASTLE An awesome site, Harlech Castle grows naturally from the rock on which it is built. Edward I built the Castle in the late 13th century as part of the 'iron ring' to keep a watchful eye over the Welsh. Ironically, in 1404 it was taken by Welsh leader Owain Glyn Dwr (pronounced; Owine Glin Dower) who set up parliament there.
CONWY CASTLE This gritty, dark stoned fortress has the rare ability to evoke an authentic medieval atmosphere. Constructed by Edward I between 1283 and 1287 it must have prompted a humbling reaction from the Welsh.
BEAUMARIS CASTLE Beaumaris Castle the great unfinished masterpiece, technically the most perfect castle in Britain. It was designed by James of St George and building began in 1295. Money and supplies ran out before the fortifications reached their full potential.
